Posts on this site about Pokémon GO are usually pretty positive and happy, so first I’d like to apologise if that’s what you’re expecting from this little post because, honestly, I think we’ve been let down a little.
Let’s be real, I’ve spent most of this year absolutely loving Pokémon GO and being pretty much addicted to it. However, I’m finding more and more that I just don’t like about the game recently.
The main thing is that everything seems to be a cash grab. On reflection, it’s been this way pretty much the whole time but I guess with all of the changes they’d made to help play people through COVID I didn’t see it as much?
Mega Evolution was the first thing to really annoy me, followed by the announcement that benefits in place for COVID were to be taken away, when most of us are still in the midst of dealing with the pandemic?
When mega evolution was first announced in a Pokémon Direct, I was super excited to get an awesome Charizard X in the mobile game. We had no idea just how they’d realise it though.
That’s where my issue comes into it. The main way to get mega energy is through doing mega raids, and it takes more than a couple to get enough for the first time. For Mons like Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise you need 200 mega energy so you need to do at least four raids each. It’s not so bad, but then after one mega evolution you have to spend more energy to do it again. It drops to 40 so again, not too bad, but then it only lasts four hours so you basically need to stock up and keep doing mega raids.
If you missed out doing enough raids for things such as Pidgeot – shame, no energy for you. No chance to mega evolve.
We’re still in a pandemic, it’s not possible for the majority to get to a gym every day for coins so that they can buy remote passes and thus this is just basically another way for Niantic to try to get us to buy passes from the store.
None of the above sits right with me, and although I genuinely adore Pokémon I don’t want to advertise the mobile game in any way on this site anymore. I’ll put the very occasional Instagram photo up but that’s it, from now on the focus on this site will be things that don’t encourage people to feel like they have to spend an obscene amount of money on something to enjoy it fully.
